Early Life and Background
Chuck Norris was born formally as Carlos Ray Norris on the 10th of March, 1940 in Ryan, Oklahoma. He was the oldest of three boys, and once described himself as “the shy kid who never excelled at anything in school.”
His father, Ray Norris, was a mechanic, bus driver, and truck driver of Irish and Cherokee Native American descent who disappeared from Norris’ life after his parents divorced.
At the age of 10, Chuck Norris moved with his mother and two younger brothers to California, where he attended North Torrance High School, before proceeding to join the Airforce.
The Military and the Making of a Martial Artist
Carlos Ray Norris joined the US Airforce in 1958, and acquired the nickname “Chuck” while serving at Osan Air Base in South Korea. He married his high school sweetheart, Dianne Holechek in the same year, and while looking for discipline, the young airman discovered Tang Soo Do, a Korean martial art that would quietly rewire the entire trajectory of his life.
Norris became acquainted with the world of martial arts while stationed in Korea with the US Air Force.
He said; “I started training over there, and then I came back and got out of the service and started teaching. And to get students in my school, I became a karate fighter”.
He left the Air Force in 1962 and never looked back.
Within years, he had become a formidable competitive fighter. In 1997, he reached an important martial arts milestone, becoming the first man in the Western Hemisphere to earn an 8th degree Black Belt Grand Master title. He held black belts in karate, taekwondo, Tang Soo Do, Brazilian jiu-jitsu, and judo after which he eventually founded his own discipline, known as Chun Kuk Do.
From Dojo to Hollywood
Norris began working in Hollywood as a martial arts instructor for celebrities before making his screen debut with a minor role in movie, The Wrecking Crew in 1968.
His friend and fellow martial artist Bruce Lee then invited him to play one of the main villains in The Way of the Dragon in 1972.
In 1977, Norris continued acting after his friend and student Steve McQueen suggested he take it seriously.
He took the starring role in the action film Breaker! Breaker! in 1977, which turned a profit. His second lead, Good Guys Wear Black in 1978, became a hit, and he soon became a popular action film star.
Through the 1980s, Chuck Norris became synonymous with a particular brand of American toughness.

Together they had two sons: Mike, born in 1962, who followed his father into entertainment as an actor and director, and Eric, born in 1965, who became a professional stuntman and NASCAR driver.
His second wife was Gena O’Kelley, whom he first met in 1997 in Dallas, Texas at a dinner while he was out with another woman.
She appeared on the set of Walker, Texas Ranger the next day, and he invited her to dinner that night , a friendship that grew into romance. The two got married in November, 1998. Their twins, Dakota Alan and Danilee Kelly, were born in 2001.
